Six years ago today I barely made it to the hospital in time to have The Youngest. After a 45 minute drive to the hospital and checking in to the emergency room I distinctly remember the feeling of urgency I was feeling. I remember the check in nurse politely asking me if I could feel my “bag of water” bulging. I also remember thinking, “What the hell kind of question is that? Who in their right mind would even check?” All the while my contractions were getting very close together. So the polite nurse sent a very annoyede, along with my please-just-listen-to-whatever-she-says husband into the elevator to labor and delivery. I recollect those doors to the elevator opening to display a small array of women in every shape and size calmly rubbing their bellies and doing their “hee hee’s and who who’s” while I felt the urge scream (must not push while in the waiting area) I can call up signing in to the patient log and writing the time 4:15 am while the polite man behind the counter informed my husband that there were three women waiting for a bed ahead of me. I can recall the feelings I had when I, through gritted teeth, told my husband that I needed a bed “NOW” and the look on his face when he informed the polite man at the desk that he too should listen-to-whatever-she-says. I can relive the anxious feeling I had wondering if my doctor would make it in time and frustration of being WAY to far along to have pain killers. I hold dear those quiet first moments we had at 4:44 am that cold morning of February 2005 and I look forward to the memories that we haven’t even made yet. I love you Baby! Happy 6th Birthday!!
In honor of the day of her birth, The Youngest has a tuna sandwich “cake” with carrot ”candles” and blueberry decorations. She also has a BabyBel cheese balloon, some yogurt pretzels and heart marshmallows on balloon picks. All this was packed in her new Duckie box that she received for her birthday this morning! As much as I’d like to take credit for it, the birthday cake was not my idea! It’s been adapted from a really excellent book called Funky Lunch, by Mark Northeast. Check it out for some really great ideas!
Have a great day (I know we will),
